Taking on Water

Now that I've mastered the art of some big subs and doing more frequently I have to do something about the amount of water the hood is letting in.

I am 100% positive the seal is fine and the hood also sits very snuggly.

When I come up from a sub and shes carrying water she runs like a dogs bollocks, I squeeze throttle full noise but she just bogs and splutters, after a minute or so she sorts her shit out and takes off again until the next big sub.

What is causing this? I have a flame arrestor on the carby with a water jacket.. is water getting through this into the carby? or is it possibly getting in somewheres else?

Now for the solution of stopping soo much water getting in... what mods can be done to the hood air intakes without restricting too much airflow to the engine?

    Cheers
    Matt

yeah sounds like water is getting into your carb....even with the sock etc.
It's normal to get alot of water in there when subbing

The standard airfilter system seems to be the best for keeping water out. Also ensure you're running a cover over the drive coupler as it throws water every where and makes a mist in there.

get on to it before you can't putt putt out of the way of that next big wave

Let go of the throttle as you enter the water..

    use a stock air box

Doing fountains, subs and nose stabs get alot of water in your hull, I just leave my bilge pump running when i ride, that way most the water gets out of the ski pretty quick....

Yeah the stock air box is the go. The sock you are running kills power. They are a terrible thing. Is it a round nose. If it is you can also block the front vents in the hood this will help slot . You may loose some top speed however

Is loosing top end speed the only bad thing that can happen by blocking off the two front air holes?

    yeah
it will breath through the back of the hood

    woah, thanks team

shes a square nose. so the factory airbox is dif to the RN one.. and I have lost it dammit.

I always give her full nose when entering the water aiming for maximum depth.
Always leave the bilge on, she gets rid of the water pretty quick, and have the cover over the drive shaft, just annoying that she splutters around.

someone must have a stock air filter cover hanging around you cold buy...

ok im not sure that the square nose has the vents in the front

but definetly put the stock aircleaner back on

Do you still run the down tubes on the underside of the hood? They are the two tubes that the water/air come into your hull. If not you may find that the water is getting dumped straight onto the airfilter. These tubes also stop your ski from sinking when its floating upside down after a crash.

There was only ever one tube on the underside when purchased the ski, I still have it attached.

on the s/n there are three front holes each side of the hood, plus the louvres on each side running along the top.
Are you still running the front cover in front of the pole? or has it gone swimming long ago?
I'd tape off the forward facing louvres, and provided you still have the front cover leave the front holes open as this is how the hood drains.

i agree with tofa about the hood downpipes I wouldnt go blocking any air intake holes as they provide a air flow. Your flame arrestor and sock is whats causing it to run like shit

yea still have the front cover.

    Might play around a bit

am i right to say square nose SJs have more vents than round nose?? Compared to a mates 750sx SN SJs have a hell of a lot of vent area

Round Nose SJ have 3 vents at the front and 2 at the back of the hood

yeah, the hood top vents are a fair bit bigger.
