    hi guys....

    i snapped a bolt .

the bolt has to be extracted as it is in the engine block and connects exhaust to it.
i drilled a hole and tried to use expensive extractor (after crc and heat treatment) but was to hard on it and snapped.
So now i have a bolt amputee with reinforcing core in it.....
tried to drill it again but just scratched the extractor end :)

is it a way to a press drill or something can be done on spot?

    Thanx

to swampy........sorry i did not understand what you meant :)

to T Bear....... dont really want to remove engine if i dont have to :(

the snapped piece stuck really really hard and flash with the bolt. you can see it only by different color....

the steel it is made is very hard.....it was 36 nzd extractor set.......

so do i have to remove engine or something can be done on spot?

    Thanx

Is there room to weld a bolt to the end of your snapped one?

It sounds like its going to be a struggle and the engine may have to come out to give room and to see whats going on. The extractor may rotate out if you can get on the end of it, long nose pliers, cir-clip pliers or even taping it with a pin punch. Remember it will loosen the opposite way to a bolt and may only need a 1/4 turn to come loose.
The next option is a bit crude but the extractor is brittle so it may shatter bit by bit if tapped with a punch, the broken bits will then come out using a piece of wire or maybe with a magnet. Be careful not to cause more harm than good.
Once out you are back where you started. The extractors tend to expand the threads so they can make the bolt even tighter, the square shaped ones seen better than the helical ones.

i knew team bigassholes gonna drop a comment. :)

to dan ........... no , it is 5 mm or so deep in.

to superjetx............thanx mate........cant pick it with anything.....it is flash with bolt..... will try to shatter it......
how about heating it up and slowly cooling to make softer? would it work?

A press drill would help or special diamond drill bit?

actually it was not a bolt.... it was double end threaded rod...... if nothing works should i just weld another one?

thanx guys for an output :)

Patience not brute force, be bloody careful. They put up a fight for ages then come out easy.
I don't think heat is an option as the alloy casing and stud are both softer.
I have seen bit extractors in catalogs but never in the flesh, these may be an option

$37 for a set! yeah that'll snap. engine out, high speed grind or weld to remove easy out, drill to remove bolt, then helicoil. it's not like it's hard to remove an engine.

the magic product you're looking for to solve your problem is....... WORK.

you'll never forum post it out.
