was winding over ski earlier today ,when i noticed a flash by coupling, ski will not wind over at all now, pulled starter motor out and pulled to bits and notice a broken spring that holds one of the brushs in,do you think this has arced out and stuffed it,any ideas????

I would replace springs and brushes. Check that the comutator is not marked. Give it a bench test and if ok put it back in. Check bushes as well.

Sound's like your ground (earth) wire which bolt's onto the starter has broken.
It's common for the wire to corrode and break down by the lug by the starter motor.

Put a jumper lead across from the motor to the battery negative to double check it.

Have you checked the fuse under the screw cap in the electric's box ?

Hi, If the bilge pump turns off while you are cranking that means all the current is going through the starter motor. Tofa was wright. Check your high current leads. To bench test the starter place it on the bench and hook a battery up to it. It should spin with alot of tork on start up. A local auto sparky can load test it for you. I have never had a starter solinoid crap out on me. Check leads and connections for corrosion.
    Good luck..
